<h2 id="early-life">Early life</h2> <p>Mathison was born on August 25, 1969 in <a href="/facts/Sarnia/WgTKsI5C">Sarnia</a>, <a href="/facts/Ontario/HUkxk5Rf">Ontario</a>, Canada,<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:2" href="#fn:2"><sup>2</sup></a> the second of two sons of parents Bill and Loretta.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:3" href="#fn:3"><sup>3</sup></a> Mathison attended <a href="/facts/Thornlea_Secondary_School/JXygS2qu">Thornlea Secondary School</a> in <a href="/facts/Thornhill,_Ontario/6eNrbnyh">Thornhill, Ontario</a> and <a href="/facts/McGill_University/amouytVp">McGill University</a> in <a href="/facts/Montreal/uQQaWd1b">Montreal</a>, <a href="/facts/Quebec/4hhNvb4t">Quebec</a> where he captained the McGill Redmen men's basketball team.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:4" href="#fn:4"><sup>4</sup></a> He graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in <a href="/facts/Civil_Engineering/avh5kEq2">Civil Engineering</a>.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:5" href="#fn:5"><sup>5</sup></a> </p> <h2 id="career">Career</h2> <p>After graduating from McGill, he began working as a model and started acting in commercials in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. This led to taking acting classes and the beginning of his acting career in Toronto. </p><p>Mathison made his film debut in <i><a href="/facts/54_(film)/pt7vp6kk">54</a></i>. He followed up this appearance with a leading role in the Canadian independent film <i>Washed Up</i>. In December 1997, he was hired to play the role of Ryan Lavery on <i>All My Children</i> filming his first scenes on December 15. Mathison worked on many events for <i>GMA</i>: The Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes, American Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and the Country Music Awards. In 2014, Mathison joined the Hallmark/Crown Media family.
