<h2 id="early-life-and-education">Early life and education</h2> <p>Malavalli was born in early March 1943 in <a href="/facts/Mysore%2c_Karnataka/xpzbccId">Mysore, Karnataka, India</a>. He moved to <a href="/facts/D%25C3%25BCsseldorf/twteRHCh">Düsseldorf, Germany</a> in 1972 following his graduation from the <a href="/facts/National_Institute_of_Engineering/o0sNsjld">National Institute of Engineering</a> with a bachelor's degree in engineering.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:21" href="#fn:21"><sup>21</sup></a> After graduating from the Institute of Engineering in Düsseldorf with a master's degree in industrial electronics, Malavalli moved to <a href="/facts/Toronto/cnXH7881">Toronto, Ontario, Canada</a>.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:22" href="#fn:22"><sup>22</sup></a> </p> <h2 id="career">Career</h2> <p>In Toronto, Malavalli worked for Canstar Communications’ fibre channel group, which was later acquired by <a href="/facts/Hewlett-Packard/abuNSYNu">Hewlett-Packard</a>.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:23" href="#fn:23"><sup>23</sup></a> While at Hewlett-Packard, he served on <a href="/facts/American_National_Standards_Institute/p3d1TQCb">American National Standards Institute's</a> T11 Technical Committee, which established universal standards for <a href="/facts/Fibre_channel/C7C0yreb">fibre channel</a>.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:24" href="#fn:24"><sup>24</sup></a><a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:25" href="#fn:25"><sup>25</sup></a><a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:26" href="#fn:26"><sup>26</sup></a> </p><p>Malavalli co-founded Brocade Communications, a producer of <a href="/facts/Storage_area_network/e7bmhrmB">storage area networks</a>, with Paul Bonderson, Jr. in 1995.<a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:27" href="#fn:27"><sup>27</sup></a><a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:28" href="#fn:28"><sup>28</sup></a><a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:29" href="#fn:29"><sup>29</sup></a><a class="footnote-ref" id="fnref:30" href="#fn:30"><sup>30</sup></a> Brocade launched in 1998 and went public in May 1999, and its CEO was convicted for illegal backdating of options in January 2008.
