When used for a splayed window, it allows more light to enter the room. In fortifications, a splayed opening is used to broaden the <a href="/facts/Arc_of_fire/gJh70U5g">arc of fire</a> (cf. <a href="/facts/Embrasure/vYKb14oM">embrasure</a>, <a href="/facts/Loophole_(firearm)/d9BvqTVs">loophole</a>). </p>
