His name is commonly transliterated Sophonias in Bibles translated from the <a href="/facts/Vulgate/RCVJAlJE">Vulgate</a> or <a href="/facts/Septuagint/jGpbyr2n">Septuagint</a>. The name might mean "<a href="/facts/Yahweh/kIUcSQFb">Yahweh</a> has hidden/protected," or "Yah lies in wait". The church father <a href="/facts/Jerome/0qVqVA73">Jerome</a> interpreted the name to mean "the watchman of the Lord". </p>
