It is a black volatile solid, first reported by Rudolph Weber in 1863. It is an intermediate in the <a href="/facts/Van_Arkel%25E2%2580%2593de_Boer_process/kw3GMBhY">van Arkel–de Boer process</a> for the purification of titanium. </p>
