He is the only naval officer to have actively served in the <a href="/facts/American_Civil_War/A9FT3ksD">Civil War</a>, the <a href="/facts/Spanish%25E2%2580%2593American_War/ScKbBPAv">Spanish–American War</a>, and <a href="/facts/World_War_I/vITTUanQ">World War I</a>. </p>
