Strzegom

Strzegom [ˈstʂɛɡɔm] is a town in <a href="/facts/%25C5%259Awidnica_County/cQMcmaLv">Świdnica County</a>, <a href="/facts/Lower_Silesian_Voivodeship/gra3EtTV">Lower Silesian Voivodeship</a>, in south-western <a href="/facts/Poland/eXJ7fd0D">Poland</a>. It is the seat of the <a href="/facts/Gmina_Strzegom/MCs76Wz0">Gmina Strzegom</a> administrative district (<a href="/facts/Gmina/MHRlJuaH">gmina</a>). It lies approximately 15 km (9 mi) north-west of <a href="/facts/%25C5%259Awidnica/tNbF6Iex">Świdnica</a>, and 52 km (32 mi) west of the regional capital <a href="/facts/Wroc%25C5%2582aw/o3scwNqQ">Wrocław</a>.
As of 2019, the town had a population of 16,106.
One of the oldest towns in <a href="/facts/Lower_Silesia/dygLhmnc">Lower Silesia</a>, with a settlement dating back to <a href="/facts/Ancient_history/P0fFQ8z5">Antiquity</a>, in the <a href="/facts/Middle_Ages/RqzEKB9v">Middle Ages</a> Strzegom became the seat of a <a href="/facts/Castellan/CtH2Uy1l">castellan</a> and a centre for clothmaking, linenmaking and <a href="/facts/Brewing/aKCgJVyJ">brewing</a>, and since the <a href="/facts/Early_modern_period/hhpHM721">early modern period</a> it became known for <a href="/facts/Granite/G2evuVKo">granite</a> mining, to which it owes the title of the "capital of Polish granite". The town has a number of precious heritage sites, most notably the <a href="/facts/Saints_Peter_and_Paul_Basilica%2c_Strzegom/B4NnxX7J">Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul</a>, one of the most outstanding examples of <a href="/facts/Gothic_architecture_in_Poland/2pGRY2by">Gothic architecture in Poland</a>, listed as a <a href="/facts/Historic_Monument_(Poland)/Y8noKGvQ">Historic Monument of Poland</a>.
