As of the 2014 census, The municipality's total population was 18,637. Lessines is a municipality of <a href="/facts/Picardy_Wallonia/1JQlmcT5">Picardy Wallonia</a>. It is primarily known as the birthplace of the <a href="/facts/Surrealism/VUJpoo6c">surrealist</a> painter <a href="/facts/Ren%25C3%25A9_Magritte/mRwSQJ3E">René Magritte</a>.
