Experts disagree as to whether or not the mane defends the male lion's throat in confrontations. </p><p>Although lions are known for their mane, not all males have one. This might be because of a <a href="/facts/Gene_polymorphism/6U9NzHwH">polymorphism</a> within males. </p>
