It is primarily used for audio and video, though it can be used for arbitrary data. </p><p>The Microsoft implementation is mostly known through the container formats <a href="/facts/Audio_Video_Interleave/2pr8AoRT">AVI</a>, <a href="/facts/ANI_(animation_file_format)/DeY4GIcv">ANI</a> and <a href="/facts/WAV/ptUfKleW">WAV</a>, which use RIFF as their basis. </p>
