<p>Autonomy and heteronomy are complementary attributes of a <a href="/facts/Language_variety/QyllMQha">language variety</a> describing its functional relationship with related varieties. The concepts were introduced by <a href="/facts/William_Alexander_Stewart/Q9nQvwo1">William A. Stewart</a> in 1968, and provide a way of distinguishing a <i>language</i> from a <i>dialect</i>. </p>
