<p>A Peierls transition or Peierls distortion is a distortion of the periodic lattice of a one-dimensional crystal. Atomic positions oscillate, so that the perfect order of the 1-D crystal is broken. It is named after <a href="/facts/Rudolf_Peierls/La4r1ISU">Rudolf Peierls</a>. </p>
