Topological string theory appeared in papers by theoretical physicists, such as <a href="/facts/Edward_Witten/lPUylPmj">Edward Witten</a> and <a href="/facts/Cumrun_Vafa/SV2BeX4A">Cumrun Vafa</a>, by analogy with Witten's earlier idea of <a href="/facts/Topological_quantum_field_theory/zHjrp3b8">topological quantum field theory</a>. </p>
