The first protocol of that kind was <a href="/facts/BB84/8d2G3lfC">BB84</a>, introduced in 1984 by <a href="/facts/Charles_H._Bennett_(computer_scientist)/8IKbwhLJ">Charles H. Bennett</a> and <a href="/facts/Gilles_Brassard/sBxLIE3P">Gilles Brassard</a>. After that, many other protocols have been defined. </p>
