The term originates from a <a href="/facts/Unix/0pNL2seI">Unix</a> <a href="/facts/List_of_utility_software/Hn3XtISQ">utility</a> that examined <a href="/facts/C_/Ky2No763">C language</a> source code. A program which performs this function is also known as a "linter" or "linting tool". </p>
