The species was <a href="/facts/Species_description/JyFpxSvJ">first described</a> by <a href="/facts/Carl_Linnaeus/gy5HWkHS">Carl Linnaeus</a> in 1761 and was previously placed in the genus <i><a href="/facts/Hepialus/06zyjocq">Hepialus</a></i>. It is distributed throughout Europe. </p>
