Whernside is a mountain in the Yorkshire Dales of Northern England. It is the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, the other two being Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. It is the highest point in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire and also the highest point in the historic West Riding of Yorkshire, with the summit lying on the boundary with Cumbria.
Although Whernside is the highest point in the modern county, Mickle Fell in southern Teesdale is the highest point within the boundaries of the historic county of Yorkshire.
It is the fifteenth most prominent hill in England, with a prominence of 408 metres.
Whernside forms a long ridge, aligned roughly north-north-east to south-south-west. It lies approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) north-west of Ingleton and 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
