Chernihiv's population is 282,747 (2022 estimate). </p><p>The city was designated as a <a href="/facts/Hero_City_of_Ukraine/z0NRngpk">Hero City of Ukraine</a> by the Ukrainian government during the <a href="/facts/Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine/kE7cHvoQ">Russian invasion of Ukraine</a>. </p>
