<p>The <i>hyperpyron</i> was a <a href="/facts/Byzantine_Empire/njEELXWF">Byzantine</a> coin in use during the <a href="/facts/Late_Middle_Ages/XNtcJjrU">late Middle Ages</a>, replacing the <i><a href="/facts/Solidus_(coin)/CwJjrjg6">solidus</a></i> as the <a href="/facts/Byzantine_Empire/njEELXWF">Byzantine Empire</a>'s standard gold coinage in the 11th century. It was introduced by emperor <a href="/facts/Alexios_I_Komnenos/bL2N7ksM">Alexios I Komnenos</a>. </p>
