Abbas III, son of Shah Tahmasp II of the Safavid dynasty, was nominally ruler of Iran from 1732 until his deposition in 1736 by Nader Khan, who then crowned himself Nader Shah, ending the Safavid era. After his removal, Abbas and his father were imprisoned in Sabzevar, Khorasan. In 1738, during Nader Shah’s campaign to Afghanistan and India, his son Reza Qoli Mirza feared a revolt and ordered the execution of Abbas, his brother, and father by Mohammed Hosein Khan Qajar. Sources like Michael Axworthy and Encyclopædia Iranica date these tragic events around 1739–1740.
