Arthur Lucas
American murderer, one of last two criminals executed in Canada (1962)

Arthur Lucas, originally from Georgia in the U.S., was among the last two people executed in Canada on December 11, 1962. Convicted of the murder of a police informant and his partner in Toronto, Lucas was hanged alongside Ronald Turpin at the Don Jail. Hanging was the only civilian method of capital punishment used in post-Confederation Canada, with firing squad reserved for military cases. Although removed from the Criminal Code in 1976, capital punishment remained under the National Defence Act until 1998. Chaplain Cyrill Everitt later revealed Lucas’s execution was botched, causing severe injury to his head.
