Borotellurate

Boron and tellurium combine to form borotellurates, heteropoly anion compounds featuring tellurate groups bonded to boron atoms. The ratio of tellurate to borate units indicates their condensation level, with structures ranging from chain-like [TeO4(BO3)2]8− anions to isolated zero-dimensional [TeO2(BO3)4]10− anions. Their oxygen arrangements often resemble those found in silicates. Tellurates adopt an octahedral TeO6 form, while borates are typically BO3 groups sharing oxygen atoms with tellurate units. The first mixed sodium rare earth borotellurates were discovered in 2015. Related compounds include boroantimonates and borophosphates, alongside other borate-based materials like boroselenates and borosulfates.

Formation

Borotellurates are formed by heating boric acid, and tellurium dioxide, with metal carbonates or oxides at over 800 °C.5 Lower temperatures can be used with a flux like potassium carbonate.6

Reactions

When heated to around 800 °C the borotellurates decompose by emitting TeO3 vapour and form a metal borate7 or metal tellurite.8
