The IPv4 header and IPv6 header contain an 8-bit Protocol or Next Header field identifying the encapsulated protocol, which determines the structure of the subsequent data. These protocol numbers are managed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). Common examples include TCP (protocol number 6), UDP (17), and ICMP (1). Other protocols like RSVP (46) and SCTP (132) are also designated by specific numbers, each standardized in corresponding RFCs.
