The University of Paris, founded in the mid-twelfth century with a charter from 1200, established the office of rector in the thirteenth century. Unlike the appointed chancellor, the rector was elected by students and faculty, initially representing only the faculty of arts. Over time, the rector’s role expanded to include the faculties of law, medicine, and theology, becoming the university's head by the fourteenth century, though with limited powers. The position was prestigious, typically held for a one-year term, and often filled by scholars from outside France during the medieval and Renaissance eras. After the university's 1970 reorganization into thirteen parts, the rectorate continues today as the Recteur de l'Académie de Paris.
