VirusTotal is a website created by the Spanish security company Hispasec Sistemas, launched in 2004 and acquired by Google in 2012. Since 2018, it has been owned by Chronicle, a Google subsidiary. VirusTotal uses multiscanning by aggregating many antivirus products and scan engines to detect malware. Contributors include the U.S. Cyber Command. Users can upload files or scan URLs, and VirusTotal employs the Cuckoo sandbox for dynamic malware analysis. Recognized by PC World in 2007, VirusTotal apologized in 2023 after private customer data, including emails from US government agencies, was accidentally exposed.
