CJK Compatibility
Unicode character block

The CJK Compatibility Unicode block contains square symbols for both CJK and Latin alphanumeric characters, created for compatibility with East Asian character sets. Originally divided into CJK Squared Words and CJK Squared Abbreviations, these characters have distinct appearances in horizontal and vertical text layouts. Notably, the block includes Japanese era symbols such as Heisei, Shōwa, Taishō, and Meiji, used in legacy sets like NEC special characters and JIS X 0213. The Reiwa era symbol, however, is included in the Enclosed CJK Letters and Months block.
