A federated state — also known as a province, region, or canton — is a territorial and constitutional entity within a federation. Unlike sovereign states, federated states lack international sovereignty, as powers are shared with the federal government. They operate under domestic law and do not have automatic standing under international law. Federated states may have varying degrees of legislative and administrative authority and can establish offices abroad to promote trade, operating within their federation's laws. Their forms of government may be republican or monarchical. Examples include the states of the US or republics within the former USSR.
