2011
Calendar year

2011 (MMXI) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar, marking the start of the Arab Spring, a wave of protests and revolutions across the Arab world that led to the overthrow of several leaders and civil wars such as the ongoing Syrian civil war. Notably, U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, and the Curiosity rover launched toward Mars. In December, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died, succeeded by Kim Jong Un. The year was declared the International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry. Samoa shifted its time zone, skipping December 30, resulting in a 364-day year.
