1991
Calendar year

1991 (MCMXCI) was a significant year marked by major geopolitical and cultural shifts. It was the final year of the Cold War, witnessing the collapse of the Soviet Union into fifteen sovereign republics. The Gulf War began as a UN coalition fought against Iraq following its invasion of Kuwait. In the cultural arena, the World Wide Web was publicly announced, catalyzing the internet’s growth. Musically, the rise of alternative rock and hip-hop reshaped popular culture, highlighted by Nirvana’s landmark album Nevermind. Economic changes included India’s liberalisation, boosting GDP but increasing inequality, and the US economy experienced a boom marked by the Dow Jones crossing 3,000 for the first time.
